Reformulated Taburin as Local Multi Micro-Nutrient Fortificant, Reported by Center for Research and Development in Nutrition and Food (CRDNF), National Institute for Health Research and Development, The Ministry of Health.

Reformulation of Taburin as local multi micro-nutrient fortificant was done to get better efficacy of formula and cheaper price for the national program. This project evaluated 2 Taburin formulas which consisted of 12 vitamins and 4 minerals added, with the minimum amount was equal to the average of RDA for Indonesian children age 6 to 59 months. The diffences were in the sources of iron. One formula was using sodium ferric-EDTA and the other using ferrous fumarate. The results indicated that Taburin with Fe-EDTA had better solubility, color and taste compared to the Taburin with Fe-Fumarate. There were complained from the panelists about the medicine smell or flavor from both formulas, these problems still needed to be overcame by another encapsulation technology. Based on calculated price Taburin with Fe-EDTA was higher. The choice was depent on the efficacy result, whether Taburin with Fe-EDTA or Taburin with Fe-Fumarate will be used for the program.
